In our setup the cruise-control box sits in a rack somewhere and runs “headless”, so the idea of attaching a screen-saver to it never occurred to me.

The idea of running it as a screen saver is just so that the CruiseControl box itself can have a screen attached to it and show that. This way, if something goes wrong and you want to do a little investigation (or in our case, if you just want to watch the Selenium tests run), moving the mouse is all you need to do.
